Concert Review: Catherine Russell Sounds Like a Dream at Jazz Alley
by Carol Banks Weber
“I only borrow from the best,” quipped Catherine Russell live at Jazz Alley, right before launching into a dreamy rendition of the Oscar-nominated, 1936 smoky-blues classic, “When Did You Leave Heaven?” — made heavenly long ago by Louis Armstrong, Nancy Wilson, and Jimmy Scott.
All the worries of life faded away the moment Grammy-winning vocalist Catherine Russell touched the divine on her sixth golden oldie, a smoky-blues classic once performed by Louis Armstrong, Nancy Wilson, and Jimmy Scott. Sunday’s final set in a four-night, six-show Jazz Alley run proved truly magical for those in attendance.
