Catherine Russell with Wynton Marsalis Big Band Holidays

Catch Catherine Russell at home for the holidays and she might be spinning anything from Bach to Motown. Russell said she especially associates Baroque and classical music with the Christmas season.

Catch Russell on the road for the holidays and she is likely lending her lush, expressive voice to swinging, souped-up arrangements of Christmas standards.

That is what she will be up to Dec. 4 when she visits Columbia with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

The collaboration is a family tradition of sorts. Russell’s mother, the late singer and instrumentalist Carline Ray, once worked with Marsalis and America’s premiere big band.

“It’s like the next generation, so it’s an honor,” Russell said.

In a varied career, Russell has established herself as a force in the jazz, blues and pop spheres. Game recognizes game — Marsalis’ versatility and his desire to stretch out and reach all sorts of people with music is what Russell admires most about him.
